Florence Kay Temple, 92, of Deltaville, VA, passed away on Monday, October 21, 2013. Born in Charleston, WV on April 25, 1921, she was the daughter of James and Florence Kelly Kay. Her parents died during her childhood, leaving her to be reared by her uncle and aunt, George and Jean Kay Thomas. She attended the Warrenton Country School in Warrenton, VA and married John H. (Jack) Temple, an FBI agent during World War II, on September 26, 1942. Their war years were spent in Boston, New Orleans and Detroit.
After the war, they returned to her husband’s home town of Petersburg, VA. Florence was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Among her activities in Petersburg, she was a member of Second Presbyterian Church, a Girl Scout leader, a member of the Appomattox Garden Club and a member of the Beech Twig at Southside Regional Hospital (formerly the old Petersburg General Hospital.) In 2003, Florence moved with her daughter, Jean and her husband, Chip, to Deltaville, VA.
She was predeceased by her husband, Jack, and her brother, Dr. William R. Kay of Richmond, VA, and is survived by her daughters Kay Temple Roberts, her husband George H. (Skip) Roberts, Jr. of Lexington, VA and Jean Temple Holt, her husband, Mark E. (Chip) Holt III and her grandchildren and their spouses- Sarah Kay Kaiser (Eric) of Tetonia, Idaho, Anne Roberts Smith (Carter) of Norfolk, VA, Susan Holt Harrison (Nick) of Richmond, VA and Mark E. Holt IV (Carter) of Richmond, VA. She is further survived by her seven great grandchildren- William Roberts Kaiser, Carter Champney Smith, Jr, Alexander Temple Smith, Blake Adams Smith, Hannah Kate Harrison, Julia Grace Harrison and Evelyn Virginia Harrison.
A graveside memorial service will be held on Thursday, October 24th at 11am in Blandford Cemetery, Petersburg, VA. The family is receiving friends at the Country Club of Petersburg immediately following the service. If desired, memorials in Florence’s name may be made to Second Presbyterian Church, 419 W.
