Floyd Elliott Davis, our beloved “Dedaddy”, went to be with his Savior whom he loved on February 13, 2015, after a brief illness.
Born on June 1, 1936 in Prince George, VA he was the son of the late Jack Davis and Estelle Peden Davis and was preceded in death by brothers, Willard Peden and Frank Davis Jr.; by sisters, Anne Griffith, Della Jenkins, Helen Stahl and Florence Davis Johnson.
He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Lois Merritt Davis; daughter, Wanda Davis Blevins and spouse, Alan Blevins; son, Gary Wayne Davis and spouse, Elisabeth Davis; grandchildren Melody Joy Aylestock and spouse, Nathan Aylestock, Stephen Davis, Jonathan Blevins and fiancée, Mary Rabon, Lauren Blevins Henson and spouse, Mitchell Henson, Kristen Blevins; and three great-grandchildren, Davis, Caedmon and Phoebe Aylestock.
He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, as well as “adopted” kids and grandkids, and many special friends who loved him dearly.
Floyd attended Prince George County schools where he played the trumpet under conductor John Mazza. He also attended Hopewell High School. Floyd began working at Hummel Ross on January 25, 1955 and retired from Stone Container on March 1, 1999, after 44 ½ years of work. He worked in maintenance, carpentry and in a supervisory role as a working foreman and general mechanic.
A gifted musician, he used his talent to cheer up those around him by singing and playing his guitar. Although shy, he sang His Savior’s praise to family and friends including the elderly who “needed to be reminded of heaven”. A committed follower of Jesus, he was a member at Powers Memorial Baptist Church. He served his church relentlessly including organizing a Valentine’s party for widows and widowers. He was always willing to lend a helping hand wherever needed. He served as an usher, deacon and oversaw the maintenance and grounds-keeping as well as the restoration of the steeple of the church he loved. He taught Sunday school and will be missed by his “buddies” who were his good friends.
Floyd delighted in God’s creation, he enjoyed working on his house in Claremont, loved watching his purple martins and the deer who would often come to visit him. He treated all people the same, as those created in God’s image and worthy of love and respect.
Although we are grieving, we are comforted that “Dedaddy” is worshipping his Lord, without shortness of breath or pain. His spouse, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren are grateful to have been loved and influenced by a man as strong, humble and gentle as their “Dedaddy”.
The family thanks the many wonderful ICU nurses at JRMC, Mr. David Seaborn and Dr. Mohammed Farooq for the excellent care he received from them. A special thank you goes to all who showered Floyd and the family with visits, prayers, cards and delicious food.
A visitation will be held at the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morrriss & Son Funeral on Sunday, February 15, 2015 from 3:00 to 5:00 PM.
A memorial service to Floyd’s life will be held at Powers Memorial Baptist Church, 2807 Jackson Street, on Monday, February 16, 2015 at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow in Merchants Hope Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Powers Memorial Baptist Church building and maintenance fund.
