Chip Washabaugh unexpectedly departed this life on January 24, 2007. Beloved husband, father, grandfather and devoted family man, he is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Nancy Smith Washabaugh of Colonial Heights, VA; a daughter, Kelly Washabaugh Hawker and husband, Mark of Richmond; son, Corey Washabaugh and wife, Beth of Colonial Heights, and two grandchildren: Elizabeth and Dylan Washabaugh. He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd Mitchell Washabaugh Jr. and Nellye Layne Washabaugh. He taught History and Geography at Prince George County High School for 28 years until his retirement in 1999. He was highly regarded by his students and was named teacher of the Year in 1991. He served in the army in VietNam and was honored for his exemplary combat service with a Purple Heart. Chip was an avid reader and a passionate Civil War buff who enjoyed searching for artifacts with his metal detector. He was a great lover of nature and the out of doors and was concerned about the environment. He was a member of the Petersburg Lions Club and St. Marks United Methodist Church. He was the dearest of men and will be sorely missed by family, friends, colleagues and former students who have been blessed by his caring, wisdom and kindness. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the family's church: St. Marks United Methodist Church, Petersburg, VA. The family will receive friends at the Chesterfield Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home & Cremation Service on Sunday, January 28, 2007 from 2 to 4 p.m. A funeral service will take place on Monday, January 29, 2007 at 11 a.m. in St. Mark's United Methodist Church, Petersburg, VA.
