Francis Lanning

Mr. Francis E. Lanning, 95, of Hopewell, VA passed away on Saturday, February 19, 2011 following a short period of declining health. Francis was preceded in death by his parents, David L. and Minnie E. Lanning of Johnsonville, SC, and wife, Stella Saunders Lanning. He is survived by a daughter, Eleanor L. Jeffers of Waynesboro; sons, Bruce E. Lanning and wife Nancy of Hopewell and Wade B. Lanning and wife Phyllis of Prince George; eight grandchildren, John Jeffers, Hilary Jeffers, Gayle Lanning, Steven Lanning, Douglas Lanning, Christine Shultz, Amy Brown and David Lanning; eight great-grandchildren, Megan Jeffers, Aaron Jeffers, Harley Shultz, Steven Shultz, Christopher Shultz, Adam Lanning, Zachary Brown and Ella Brown; and many nieces and nephews. Francis came from South Carolina to Hopewell in 1933 and worked at Hercules from then until his retirement 1978. He was a member of the First Christian Church since his marriage in the church in 1939. The family will receive friends at the Hopewell chapel of J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home on Tuesday, February 22, 2011 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Funeral services will take place in the funeral home chapel on Wednesday, February 23, at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in the Sunset Memorial Park, Chester, VA.
