LCDR Fred Boyd Curling, USNRET, age 95, of Briny Breezes, FL, and Spring Grove, VA, passed away on Saturday, June 15, 2024.
Fred was born and raised in South Norfolk (now Chesapeake), VA, with his parents Maggie Boyd and Fred Wilson Curling and siblings Marvin, Donnie, and Marion. LCDR Curling joined the Navy at age 19, and served his country for 27 years, including in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He continued his career at Surry Nuclear Power Station, then many years with the Atlantic Group.
Fred loved his family! He married Rose Marie Birt, in 1951 and had 71 very loving years together until her passing in 2023. They were blessed with six children, John (Lorraine), David, Jessica Heising (John), Carl (Kristen), Marianne (Walter Hall), and Cynthia Carlson (Brian); plus eleven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Fred Curling made friends for life. He was known for his love for his family and his kindness. He was devoted to his church, his Catholic faith, and his homes in Florida and Virginia. He enjoyed boating and the sea, traveling, the Ruritan, golf, hosting huge pig roasts, phone calls, riding his tractor, and Chivas Regal.
