Frederick Warren Beck, Iii

November 13, 1942 — July 19, 2024

Frederick Warren Beck III (Skipper), 81, of Petersburg, VA, passed away at his residence on July 19, 2024. Raised in Petersburg, VA, he was the son of the late Frederick Warren Beck, Jr. and Mary Joyner Cox Beck. He is survived by his daughter, Lisa Beck Falvo and husband, Mark; his son, Frederick Warren Beck IV; his three grandchildren, Parker Elizabeth Kinton, Olivia Annisa Falvo, and Logan Douglas Falvo; his brother, George Richard Beck and wife, Joanne; his sister, Susan Beck Folkins; his loving friend, Betty Ann Tucker; his dear neighbors, Ben and Lee Boisseau; as well as several nieces, nephews, and numerous close friends.

He was a 1965 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College and received his law degree from the University of Virginia. Upon graduation, he worked for a year as law clerk for The Honorable Albertis S. Harrison, former governor of Virginia, and then serving as Justice of the state's Supreme Court. After that, he became a trial lawyer and partner first with a Norfolk law firm and later with a Richmond law firm. After retiring from the legal profession in 1991, he renovated a 20 year old Airstream travel trailer and toured the east coast from Nova Scotia to Key West. He lived in the Airstream for two years while building a log home on the James River near Bent Creek in Appomattox County. He took up whitewater kayaking and was soon paddling whitewater all over the country and world including North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Colorado, the Grand Canyon, the Alps, Costa Rica, Ecuador, New Zealand, and the Adirondacks of New York. His visit to the Adirondacks prompted a move to Lake Placid, NY, in 2005, where he took up skiing. He moved back to Petersburg, VA, in the fall of 2021, to be closer to family. While he was no longer as active in extreme sports, he enjoyed spending time with his daughter and her family and reconnecting with old friends.

He lived a full life with no regrets. His 81 years were filled with travel, adventure, family and friends. "Cowboy Skip" will be missed dearly by those who knew and loved him.

There will be a private graveside service at Blandford Cemetery in Petersburg, VA. A celebration of his life will be held at the Country Club of Petersburg, on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. The family is being served by the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home.
