Frederick Lawrence Rubes (Larry) died unexpectedly November 26, 2016 at Johnston Willis Hospital in Richmond, VA. He was born on July 14, 1947 in Gloversville, NY, the son of Edward and Rosina Rubes. After completing his education he was employed by John Tyler Community College in Chester, VA as Director of Information Technology. He was a very dedicated employee and loved working at the same college for 44 years. He is survived by his wife, Bridget; daughter, Courtney Southerland and husband, John; grandson, Hunter Southerland of Wake Forest, NC; brother, Edward Rubes; sister, Rosina Rubes of Raleigh, NC; and many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews, all of whom were very dear to him throughout his life. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Rebecca Rubes of Raleigh. Larry was a faithful Catholic and a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Colonial Heights, VA. He will be remembered for his love of sports, especially the Redskins and NC State Football. He will also be remembered for his great sense of humor, kind generous spirit, incredible work ethic and most of all his love of family. He will be missed by all who knew him. The family would like to extend a special thank you to all the nurses, doctors and staff at Johnston Willis Hospital for their wonderful care and compassion. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 10, 2016 at Raleigh Memorial Park, 7501 Glenwood Ave, Raleigh, NC 27612. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Larry’s memory to the American Cancer Society.
