“The day which we fear as our last is but the birthday of eternity.” The life of an exceptional man ended when Gary Lee Burnette gave his heart and soul peacefully to God in Sutherland, VA on Oct. 23, 2016. Gary was born in Newport News, VA to the late Sidney and Thelma Burnette, who taught him the value of a good work ethic and a strong and honest personal character. The family moved to Hobgood, NC, where he lived during his childhood. Gary is the brother of Linda Sue Hall (Bill) of Morrisville, NC. In 1968, he met the love of his life, Yvonne Langley. After a three month courtship, they married and shared 47 wonderful years of faithful and unwavering love. Together they raised three loving children, Mandy Burnette, Melanie Crider (Mark) and Marty Burnette (Christina). Gary will be remembered for his unconditional love and selfless devotion to his wife and children. He was truly a family man whose greatest joy came from spending time with his family. More than anything he loved being Poppa to his grandchildren Kayla, Ashlee, Logan, Zackary, Matthew, Cody and Dillon. Gary retired from CSX Transportation after 41 years of service. After retiring, he enriched the lives of many people through years of volunteering at church and in the community. He went about his work and giving a helping hand to others with no fanfare and always chose to work “behind the scenes.” His actions and deeds demonstrated his deep faith and love for God. A memorial service celebrating Gary’s life will be held at Ocran United Methodist Church (20221 Cox Rd, Sutherland) on Thursday, Oct. 27 at 11 a.m. The family will receive friends prior to the service, beginning at 10 a.m. Burial will be at Rocky Mount Memorial Park (4454 Dortches Blvd, Rocky Mount, NC) on Oct. 28 at 11 a.m. In his memory, memorial contributions may be made to Ocran United Methodist Church (P.O. Box 309, Sutherland, VA 23885) or simply hug someone special to you and tell them how much you love them. Gary was a man against which all others should be measured. We love you so much and your love for us will forever live in our hearts. Condolences may be registered at
