Genevieve M. Mayes, 84, widow of Alton Mayes, died Sunday, March 28, 2004 after a lengthy illness. She was the daughter of the late Arthur J. and Emily Lee Moody. She was born in Norfolk, but spent most of her life in Petersburg and was a 1949 graduate of Farmville State Teacher’s College (Longwood) with a BS degree in Elementary education. She taught school for the Chesterfield School System for 37 years. She was a member of Second Baptist Church in Petersburg. She is survived by one son, Larry W. Owens of Petersburg; two grandchildren; one sister, Charlotte M. Houser and her husband Lt. Col (Retired) Donald Houser of Prince George; two nephews, Sherwood L. Ford of New Kent and Jerry M. Ford of Disputanta. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 pm Wednesday at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. Interment will be in Blandford Cemetery. Family will receive friends tonight from 7-8:30 pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made in her memory to Second Baptist Church, 3355 Johnson Road, Petersburg, VA 23805.
