George Herbert Booth

December 19, 1924 — May 2, 2017

George Herbert Booth of Hampton VA and formerly a resident of North Dinwiddie, VA, passed peacefully on May 2, 2017. He was born in Lakeview, SC, December 19, 1924, to M. Truss Booth and Eva Smith Booth. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Margaret Hardy Booth; his son-in-law, F J “Sonny” Scott; as well as his four brothers and a sister.
A former employee of the Progress-Index, he managed the Composing Room for numerous years before taking an early retirement. Later, he served 13 years as a Board of Director for Southside Electric’s District 1. He was an active member of Tabb St Presbyterian Church, serving as deacon and elder. Over the years he was involved with the Ruritan’s, Knights of Pythias, ACRE, and various groups. His interests and likes included gardening, traveling abroad, reminiscing about the “good ol days,” reading and learning new things, tinkering, and socializing with his circle of friends. A devoted husband of 65+ years, a loving father and grandfather, and a friend to all, he believed in the importance of making a difference and was known for his benevolence and gracious ways.
He is survived by his daughter, Janet Booth Scott of Hampton; grandchildren, Olivia, Dana, and Aaron Yancey & wife, Kelsey; great-grandchildren, Jaquon Stern, Yvette Harris, and Wyatt Booth Yancey; step-grandchildren, Tracie West, Robin Matthews, and Joey Williams; numerous nephews and nieces; and several in-laws.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 8, 2017 in Southlawn Memorial Park, Prince George, VA with the Reverend James Blankenship, officiating. The family is being served by the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss and Son Funeral Home. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Tabb St Presbyterian Church, P O Box 831, Petersburg, VA 23804, or Patrick Henry Family Services, P O Box 1398, Brookneal, VA 24528.
