George Allen Elko, 61, of S. Chesterfield passed away on Friday, February 5, 2021. Born February 7, 1959, he was the son of the late Ruth Louise Gregory and John William Elko, Jr., and was also preceded in death by his brothers, John W. Elko III and Gregory L. Elko. A lifetime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Petersburg, George was involved with numerous ministries and programs in the community, such as the Hope Center in Petersburg. An avid craftsman, George spent a lot of time as a casual carpenter. He was a history buff who appreciated 19th century Americana, particularly Civil War history. A relic hunter, George managed to accumulate many Civil War antiques and treasures, many times by using his trusty metal detector. Whether he was running, hiking or riding his bike, he always found solace in being outdoors.
He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved sons, Neil and Zachary Elko; longtime companion, Sue Beland; siblings, Susan Tardy and husband, Carrol, Patricia Robertson, Daniel Elko and wife, Wanda, Joseph Elko and wife, Betty, Mary Lou Reynolds, Pamela Sweeney and husband, George; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 20, 2021, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 151 W Washington St, Petersburg, VA 23803. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at the church.
