George Hughes

George Russell Hughes, 95, of Chester, formerly of Hopewell, passed away at home on February 27, 2010, surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his five beloved daughters: Lynne Jones, Gloria Nowell, Linda Pevan (Richard), Rachel Hawk and Toni Ledgerwood; one step-daughter Beth Neilsen; grandchildren: Sherry Powers (Wayne), Jeff Jones, Tracey Glass(Don), Douglas Nowell (Cookie), Bob Marney (Tonya), Jack Marney, Amy Jones (Dennis), Samoa Allen (Matt), Ginny Ledgerwood, Lisa Ledgerwood, Winter Ledgerwood, Vicki Greene (Jeremy), and Steven Pevan; 18 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren; nephews Glen Hughes and Chic Blackwell (Betsy); niece Merle Meckes (Roland) and many other nephews, nieces, and beloved friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Kathleen; his parents John Henry and Georgia Lane Hughes, five sisters and four brothers, and two grandchildren. â??Russellâ? was born September 5, 1914, in Mt. Olive, North Carolina and moved to VA when he was a teen. He served in the Merchant Marines and worked at Woods Dairy in Hopewell before going to Continental Can Co., where he retired as a turbine operator in 1979 after 37 years. He was a wonderful Christian man and loved his Enon Church of God. His greatest passion was deep-sea fishing off the Captain Stacy IV of Atlantic Beach, NC, where he fished almost weekly for 30 years and often won citations and jackpots for the biggest grouper or red snapper. He also was an avid gardener till he was 95 and raised the best tomatoes! He loved westerns and Wheel of Fortune on television, the Atlanta Braves, and traveling. The family will receive friends on Wednesday March 3, 2010 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. A funeral service will be held at the Chester Chapel of J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home Thursday March 4, 2010 at 1:00 PM with Pastor Bryan Ogle officiating. Interment will be in Bermuda Memorial Park, Chester Virginia.
