George Washington Thore, 86, of Hopewell, passed away on Tuesday, January 3, 2012. Mr. Thore was a U.S. Army Air Corp Veteran, who served in the WWII American Theater as a Flexible Gunner. While serving with the Third Bomber Division in 1945 he earned three Bronze Stars, the Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters, and he received the WWII Victory Medal. He was a retired pipe fitter from Allied Chemical, now Honeywell in Hopewell, VA. Mr. Thore is the youngest surviving of ten children of the late Thomas Jefferson Thore and Sarah Eliza Mickey Thore; he is the widower of Peggy M. Thore. He loved to hunt and fish, and enjoyed teaching his grandchildren to fish. Mr. Thore was an avid race car enthusiast and loved to watch Richard Petty race. He was an excellent provider for his family. He is survived by his sons, Donald Thore of Chester, Tracy Thore and wife Candi of Waverly; daughter, Janet Haase and husband Randall of Prince George; grandchildren, Jason Haase and wife Rebecca of Prince George, and Maxwell Haase of Prince George. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 5, 2012 at the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 6, 2012 at Bermuda Memorial Park in Chester, VA, with Dr. Ivan Perkinson, officiating. Condolences may be registered online at
