Georgia Milam Reames

Milam (Smith) Cooper Reames, born on March 1st, 1927, in Bennettsville, South Carolina, died peacefully surrounded by family and friends on Thursday, January 12th, 2017, in Williamsburg, Virginia. Milam was a widow of John Robert Reames, who passed in 1987. She is survived by her two children and their spouses (Janet and Don Douglas of Williamsburg, VA; Gary and Linda Cooper of McKenney, VA), her treasured nephews (David Stanley; Allen Stanley; Joe Edwards), her three grandchildren (Jennifer Cooper; Whit Douglas; Rob Douglas), and her great-granddaughter (Autumn Cooper). Milam, the last surviving and youngest of nine children, grew up and lived primarily in Hopewell, Virginia, prior to moving in 2005 to Dominion Village, Williamsburg, VA (where she lovingly earned the name “Smiling Milam”). A proud graduate of Hopewell High School Class of 1944, she held a successful career as a civil service administrator helping to organize and run the Quartermaster School Library at Fort Lee, Virginia. She was dedicated to her faith, her family, and her citizenship; both her passion and commitment to these convictions were unwavering. Throughout her life, she served as a shining example to those around her with a dedicated work ethic and enthusiasm for important causes. Milam, known affectionately by her grandsons as Moné, is deeply treasured by her family and they will always remain grateful for her love. A graveside service and burial will be held 11am Thursday, January 19th, 2017, at Appomattox Cemetery in Hopewell, Virginia; a memorial service will be held 1pm Saturday, January 21st, 2017, at Dominion Village in Williamsburg, VA. Her family requests in lieu of flowers, donations be sent in honor of Milam Reames to The Alzheimer’s Association, Greater Richmond Chapter ( alz.org/grva/in_my_community_donate.asp ).
