Gerald "Jerry" Francis Ellis, 84, of Chester, died peacefully on February 29, 2024 at Bon Secours Community Hospice House. He was born in Petersburg, Virginia on September 15, 1939, to William V. and Beatrice Gainey Ellis.
Jerry was a graduate of Petersburg High School and attended the University of Richmond. He was a proud member of the Army National Guard from 1955 to 1962. He was a member of Second Presbyterian Church and served as deacon, elder and trustee among many other roles. Jerry helped to reorganize the Presbyterians Men's group which continues to be active. He received the honorary title of Elder Emeritus on November 15, 2020. Jerry had a passion for sports and was an avid fan of the New York Yankees and University of Virginia Athletics. He was instrumental in the early success of the United States Slow Pitch Softball Association and inducted into their National Hall of Fame in 1981 and into the Virginia USSSA Hall of Fame in 1998. Jerry also loved his years as assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 175. He retired in 1998 after 35 years with Allied Signal / Honeywell as a project auditor. Jerry made many lifelong friends through the organizations of which he was involved. Most of all, he took immense pride in watching his family grow, and providing guidance and support. He leaves behind many cherished memories.
Jerry is survived by his beloved wife Carole of 63 years. Together they had three children, Michael S. Ellis (Peyton), Theresa E. Moore (Lonnie), and Stephanie E. Hammond (Joey); five grandchildren, Madison Ellington (Trey), Brian Moore, Maclaine Peterson (Josh), Caleb, and Liv Hammond; great grandchild, Mackenzie Ellington; and brother, William "Bill" C. Ellis (Mona).
A service to celebrate his life will be held on Saturday March 9, 2024 at 11:00 am with a reception following. Both will be held at Second Presbyterian Church.
