Gerald Bennette Rogerson Sr., 84, a life-long resident of Dinwiddie County, died peacefully on August 28th, 2017. Mr. Rogerson is the son of Abram Bennette and Flora Hampton Rogerson and the brother of Jeanette Overton. Mr. Rogerson was born on May 14th, 1933 in Bear Grass, North Carolina and moved to Dinwiddie with his family as an infant. He worked the family farm and was an employee of Brown and Williamson Tobacco Company for many years prior to his retirement. He was a proud member of the congregation at Mount Olivet United Methodist Church for over five decades. Mr. Rogerson was a veteran of the United States Army. He was drafted and completed Basic Combat Training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina with a follow-on duty assignment in Japan in the early 1950’s. He was a tremendous advocate and ardent supporter of our military forces regardless of service or branch. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and regular contributor and volunteer to multiple veteran service organizations. He had a special place in his heart for military members who served our great Nation in peace and at war. His father was a veteran of WWI and his great grandfather was veteran of the Civil War, serving in Echo Company of the 17th North Carolina Infantry Regiment. He is survived by Shirley Rogerson of Dinwiddie; his four children, Richard Rogerson (Cindy), Bennette Rogerson (Debra), Karen Wilkins of Dinwiddie, and Charles Rogerson (Colonel, Retired, U.S. Army) of Yorktown, Virginia; six grandchildren, Richard Rogerson (Chrissy) and Mason Rogerson of Dinwiddie, Sergeant Daniel Rogerson (Gina), U.S. Army, of San Antonio, Texas, Ensign Charles Rogerson, U.S. Navy, Madeline Rogerson and Molly Rogerson of Yorktown, Virginia, and one great-grandchild. He is also survived by a nephew, Barry Wray (Bonnie) of Chester, Virginia. The family will host a memorial service at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, September 3, 2017 at Mount Olivet United Methodist Church, 16414 McKenney Highway, McKenney, VA 23872.
