Harry Thomas Collier, 79, of Hopewell died Sunday, March 13, at Southside Regional Medical Center after a long illness.

Mr. Collier was born in Hopewell on July 8, 1931, to James L. and Theodora Strickland Collier. He graduated from Hopewell High School in 1950. In 1956 he earned a degree in chemical engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute where he was captain of the tennis team. He worked for Allied Chemical for fifteen years before joining the Virginia Environmental Protection Agency where he worked in air pollution control. He retired in 2001.

Mr. Collier was an avid sports fan, particularly for Virginia Tech, the New York Yankees and the Washington Redskins. At one time, he was the tennis champion of Hopewell. He also enjoyed golf and excelled at bowling. After years of declining health, he eventually required the care of the kind staff at Greenfield in Petersburg.

Mr. Collier was preceded in death by his parents, his brother James, whose ship was torpedoed in World War II, and his sister Christine (Cricket) Collier Taylor.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years Madelyn Kay Wilson Collier; his sister-in-law Connie W. Watson and her husband George of Williamsburg; his niece Christina W. Brookshire and husband Matt of Fletcher, N.C.; great-niece Anna Ruth Brookshire of Fletcher; nephew William H. Taylor III and wife Marilyn of Charlotte, N.C.; and great-niece and nephew Jennifer Taylor and Chris Taylor of Charlotte.

Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8 PM, Friday, March 18, at the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home.
A funeral service will be held at 11 AM, Saturday, March 19, in Newville United Methodist Church in Prince George County with burial in the church cemetery.
