Harry R. Ellis, 83, of Petersburg passed away on Thursday, March 20, 2008 at McGuire Veteranâ??s Hospital. Born December 11, 1924 he was the son of the late Jimmy Louis and Nannie Twisdale Ellis. Harry served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II where he was awarded the Purple Heart. He is survived by his wife, Lucy C. Ellis; son, Harry Ellis Jr. and wife, Anne of Roanoke Rapids, NC; stepchildren, Nancy Adcox of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Debbie Stancill and husband, Norman of Winterville, NC, Penny Merhout and husband, James of Petersburg, VA and Tony Adcox of Winterville, NC; siblings, Virginia Williams of Raleigh, NC, Warren Ellis of Elizabeth City, NC and Louis Ellis of Roanoke Rapids, NC; 2 grandchildren; 4 step grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. The family will receive friends at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home tonight, Saturday, March 22, 2008 from 7 to 9 pm. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Monday, March 24, 2008 at 11am with Father Jay Wagner officiating. Burial will follow in Southlawn Memorial Park.
