Hazel Thompson Libby

March 9, 1926 — January 7, 2014

Hazel Thompson Libby, 87, a longtime resident of Hopewell, passed away Tuesday, January 7, 2014. Born in Brunswick County, VA, she was the daughter of the late George Monroe Thompson and Annie Mabyn Cannon James. She was also preceded in death by her husband, George D. Libby, a daughter, Gloria Wingo, and three brothers, Ray James, Jack James, Jr. and Leland Thompson. Hazel was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Hopewell and a retired Senior Lab Technician with Allied Chemical. She was a talented quilter making over 70 quilts, each lovingly stitched by hand. She is survived by her daughter, Joy Libby Perkins and husband, Peter; grandchildren, Brett Sligh Wollaston and husband, Paul, Shay Sligh and wife, Edel, Jeremy Wingo and William Myers; great-grandchildren, Virginia Sligh, Mariah Sullivan, Trevor Myers, Elizabeth Sligh, Tyler Myers, Tyson Kestner, C. J. Sligh, and Jordan Wingo; a brother, Roy James and wife, Joyce, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Memorial services for Mrs. Libby will be private. Donations in her memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN, 38105 or to a local food bank. Condolences may be registered at www.jtmorriss.com
