Helen Compton Hogarth, was born and raised in Sarton, West Virginia, the youngest of twelve, to Elbert Jasper and Cordia Ellen Compton. Married to LTC Albert W. Ride, Jr. (USA, retired) for 26 years, until his death. Helen married Earl Lee Hogarth and enjoyed 39 years of marriage. Helen is survived by her husband, Earl; and three children from her first marriage, Linda Ride Milburn, Jeffrey L Ride (Sue), and Michele Ride Woods; and four stepchildren, Kenneth Wayne Hogarth (Tonya), Belinda Hogarth Burch, Susan Hogarth Ozmar (Barry), and Lori Hogarth; as well as 17 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Helen enjoyed square dancing, bowling, reading, and dominoes. She was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church. She was also an avid fan of Duke Blue Devil basketball. She also enjoyed playing softball, as a first baseman, on an all women's softball team. As a military spouse, Helen had the opportunity to live in West Germany, where she made many lifelong friends. Her love of the West Virginia Mountains was evident by the frequency and duration of her trips to her birthplace of Sarton, West Virginia. She was a devoted wife, a loving mother, and doting grandmother. Helen was addressed by her grandchildren as Grammaw, Bammaw, and Granbo. She loved fresh vegetables, cornbread, and cold buttermilk. There was nothing that she would not do for her husband, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. We loved her immensely as she was the center of our world. She will be greatly missed.
