Henri Manikus

July 15, 1929 — December 30, 2017

Henri Manikus, 88, passed away on December 30, 2017 at John Randolph Medical Center. He was born in Indonesia on July 15, 1929. As a young teenager in Indonesia during WWII, Henri was held in a Japanese internment camp for 6 years until his life was saved by the American Red Cross. As a young man, he was a radio operator for the Indonesian Coast Guard where he met and married his wife of 50 years, Georgine. Amid political unrest, they became refugees and had to move to the Netherlands. The young family, sponsored by the Hopewell Church of the Brethren, then immigrated to the U.S. Henri became a sheet metal mechanic at Hercules until his retirement. Henri loved to hike at both Battlefield Park and Pocahontas State Park. He swam at the Hopewell Community Center and would be there when the doors opened. He is preceded in death by his wife, Georgine, his eldest son, Gerald and a grandson, Benjamin. He leaves behind Gerald’s fiancé, Marla; a son, Hubert Manikus (Shelley); daughters, Helene Noel (Ralph), Diana Wicker, and Meloney Lew (Thomas); grandchildren, Christina (Ernesto), Gregory, Michael (Asami), Anna, Rachel (Tom), Corrine (Reuben), Kelley (Trevor), Philip, Ethan, and Adam; great-grandchildren, Annabeth, Ryland and Sebastian; his wonderful and loving friend, Peggy Reed; siblings, Jan and Cecile; sister-in-law, Lois and many nieces and nephews in Canada and the Netherlands. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, January 3rd at the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son with interment to follow at Southlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior beginning at 12:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the American Red Cross, the Hopewell Church of the Brethren or the Hopewell Community Center. Condolences may be registered at www.jtmorriss.com .
