Henry Anderson “Penny” Joyner, 85, a lifelong resident of Matoaca, VA, passed away Tuesday, October 03, 2017 after a period of declining health. He was the son of the late Patrick Henry and Hattie E. Daughtry Joyner. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Jean Marie Perkinson Joyner; siblings, Hunter Joyner, Wade Joyner, Harry Joyner, Margaret J. Barracks, and Virginia J. Staples, as well as several half-siblings. He is survived by his daughter, Sherry Swanson and husband, Bryan; grandsons, Burley H. Langford, III and wife, Chelsey, and Brian W. Langford and fiancé, Olivia Jenkins; great-granddaughter, Emma Joyce Langford; special friend, Burley Langford, Jr., a host of nieces and nephews; devoted caregivers, Edith Smith, Geraldine Best, and Travis Wilson among others. Penny was a longtime member of Matoaca Baptist Church. He enjoyed many years working in construction and was well known as an excellent finish carpenter. He retired from Gilbert C. Martin Construction Company after more than 30 years of service, and then operated his own business for the next 15 years. Penny could handle even the most complex jobs and considered staircases to be his signature. He was often called on to do what others were afraid to attempt. He loved being outside, working in the garden, and would often talk about his days as a young man plowing with a mule. He also loved sweets, especially chocolate, and was always ready for desert to be served. Penny was active in Freemasonry for many years and conducted over 100 Masonic funeral services. He was a member of Powhatan Starke Lodge No. 124, Blandford Lodge No. 3, Petersburg Lodge No. 15, Dinwiddie Lodge No. 136, and Edwards Lodge No. 308. He served as District Deputy Grand Master for the 29th Masonic District in 1983. In addition, he was a member of Petersburg Union Royal Arch Chapter No. 7 and Appomattox Commandery No. 6. Above all he did in life, time with his family, especially his grandsons, was his favorite pastime. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m.. Friday, October 6, 2017 at Matoaca Baptist Church with Pastor Donald Joyner officiating. Interment with Masonic Rites will follow at Woods United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, October 5, 2017 at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home.
