Herbert Lyman Kimmel, 82, of Petersburg passed away Thursday, Janaury 29, 2004. He was born in Bowling Green, Ohio, the son of the late Dr. & Mrs. Herbert Kimmel. Herbert earned a AB degree in English Literature from the University of North Carolina and a M. Ed. in guidance and counseling from the University of Virginia. He is survived by his wife, Irene Kimmel; daughter, Mary Elizabeth and husband Dr. Joseph Lebow; sisters, Jane Kimmel from North Carolina. He taught English and sciences in the Petersburg public schools. Herbert served in the U.S. Navy and Naval Reserve for many years and is a life member of the Military Officer Association of America. After a lapse of twenty-eight years he decided to resume playing the violin, he joined the Colonial Heights String Ensemble under the direction of Fred Clements and played with that organization for about two years. Herbert was invited by Dr. Gatlin to attend the Thursday night rehearsal of the Petersburg Symphony. He played with the Petersburg Symphony for many years. Family will receive friends from 2-4 PM Sunday, February 1st at J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, Petersburg. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Crater Community Hospice, 840 West Roslyn Road, Suite E., Colonial Heights, VA 23834 or Trinty United Methodist Church, 215 S. Sycamore St., Petersburg, VA 23803 or your favorite charity.
