Herman Bassman, 97, of Petersburg, VA, passed away on Tuesday August 3, 2010. He was the 2nd son and fourth child of early 20th century Jewish immigrants to Philadelphia. He is preceded in death by brother, Abraham Bassman, and two sisters, Dora Seidler, and Tillie Goldway. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years Helen Levitt Bassman, two sons, Mitch Bassman and his wife Margie, of Springfield VA, Larry Bassman and his wife Lyn, of Fresno, CA., three grandchildren, Damien Bassman and his wife Chelsea, Nili Bassman, Jonah Bassman, two step-grandchildren, Lauren Chavin and her husband Lance, Susan Kasimer, and other family and friends. Mr. Bassman served his country proudly in the Army Aircorps during WWII, and was an active member of Congregation Brith Achim where he served for numerous years as its gabbai. Mr. Bassman was the oldest living former Philadelphia Eagles football player and was honored for this during halftime of one of the Eagles home games in 2007. He was the owner and president of the Globe Department Store in Petersburg, VA until he and his wife retired and closed the store in 1981. A service will be held 3:00p.m. Wednesday, August 4, 2010 at Congregation Brith Achim in Petersburg, interment to follow at Brith Achim Cemetery. Condlences may be registered at
