Herman Douglas Hammond, 94, of Hopewell, VA passed away on Wednesday, September 15, 2021. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Douglas Hammond and Frances Iola Denson Hammond; brother, Crawford Brown; and his sister, Dorothy Morgan. He is survived by his loving wife of 74 years, Barbara F. Hammond; son, Michael D. Hammond (Gussie); daughter, Kay H. Rackley (Ben); grandchildren, Ben A. Rackley II “Bert” (Christina), Meredith Rackley, Julie DeVoe (Ron), Jennifer Hammond, Ryan Hammond (Kate), Katie Hellard (Christopher), Emily Hammond; great-grandchildren, Marybeth Rackley, Evelyn Rackley, Brennan McCain, Jackson Fuller, Joshua Fuller, Declan Hammond, Luca Hammond, Reed Hammond, Chase Hellard, Olivia Hellard; great-great grandchild, Ella McCain; as well as numerous extended family and friends. Herman was a U.S. Navy veteran serving during World War II. He worked as a Systems Analyst for Allied Chemical and the Commonwealth of Virginia. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, and spending time with his family. He was a devoted husband, father and a beloved granddaddy. Herman was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church in Hopewell. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. on Monday, September 20, 2021 at First United Methodist Church 502 W. Broadway, Hopewell, VA 23860. A funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. in the church. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to First United Methodist Church or Crater Community Hospice. The family is being served by the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss and Son Funeral Homes.
