Herndon H. Smith

Herndon H. Smith, 90, of Hopewell, passed away on Tuesday, September 27, 2016. He was preceded in death by his parents, David O. and Blanche Chapman Smith; and son, Clinton H. Smith. Herndon was a Naval WWII veteran serving as Quartermaster in the Pacific Theater. He was a life member of the American Legion Post 146, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 637, Hopewell Moose Lodge #1472, and the Richmond Masonic Lodge #10 for over 50 years. He was a member of Ramsey Memorial United Methodist Church and volunteered with the Hopewell Food Pantry for over 25 years. He loved serving his community and was a part of the Senior Citizen Advisory Commission which led to his induction into the Hopewell Senior Citizen Hall of Fame. He was recognized by the Rotary Club as a Paul Harris Fellow. He is survived by his wife, Louise H. Smith; son, Warren H. Smith and wife, Katie; daughter, Julie S. Dauksys and husband, Chris; daughter-in-law, Lisa Smith Wead; three grandchildren, Laura S. McHale and husband, Jason, Daniel E. Smith and wife, Arly, and Evan P. Dauksys; and one great-grandchild, Luke D. McHale. A funeral service will be held at the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home on Saturday, October 1, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. Interment will follow at Woodland Cemetery, 15 Cemetery Rd., Chase City, VA 23924. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M., on Friday, September 30, 2016. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to VCU Scott Stevens Communication Scholarship Fund or to a non-profit community related charity of your choice.
