Hilda Shelton Marek

Hilda Shelton Marek , 93, went rejoicing to her home in heaven on July 13, 2017. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 58 years, Robert Earl Marek.
Hilda was born on May 25, 1924, in Mineral, Virginia, to Thomas Frederick and Mae Payne Shelton. Hilda was preceded in death by her loving parents and siblings, Harry Monroe Shelton, Jr., Lillian (Cebie) Shelton Terrell and Joyce Shelton Clark. She graduated from Louisa High School in 1942, then moved to Monument Avenue in Richmond where she worked in state government. During World War II she lived in Petersburg where she met and fell in love with Robert Earl Marek, a Dinwiddie County farmer. Hilda often said she wanted to marry a farmer. On December 8, 1945, her dream came true, and her 58-year union with Robert began on the farm where he was raised. Together they made a home for their family that was filled with love.
Hilda is survived by her four children, Robert Earl Marek, Jr., and his wife, Cindy, Albert Frederick Marek and his wife, Sue, Gilbert Shelton Marek and his wife, Dwen, Kathleen Marek Morgan and her husband, Bill, and her grandchildren, James (JJ) and Luke Williams, Mathew and Jason Marek, Lauryn Marek Harris, James (Jay), Sam and Anne (Annie) Morgan. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, fantastic homemaker, gardener, cook, antique collector and proprietor of the family farm stand. Hilda was a great story teller. She could make ordinary events come alive with well-timed humor. She was known for her impersonation of comedian Phyllis Diller in the “Gong Show” at her beloved Rock Church.
However, it was Hilda’s unwavering faith in God, her generosity of spirit and service to others that will be forever remembered.
The family will greet friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 18th at the Petersburg Chapel of J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 19th at Blandford Church, 319 S. Crater Road, Petersburg, followed by interment at Blandford Cemetery.
