Howard D. Brown, Sr., .89, of Petersburg died Thursday, August 19, 2004. He retired as President and Owner of Tri-City Coaches Inc. in Petersburg. He is survived by his wife of 65 years Thelma S. Brown, their son Howard D. Brown, Jr. of Petersburg and his wife Darleen, and two granddaughters, Jessica P. Brown of Petersburg and Bonnie L. Brown of Richmond. Also one sister Marie B. Slate of Yorktown and her husband, Saxe and a sister-in-law Maude W. Brown of Colonial Heights. In addition numerous nieces and nephews. A native of Petersburg, during his lifetime he was active in many civic, community, and church organizations. Some of which included Petersburg Retail Merchants Associations, President of Petersburg Chamber of Commerce 1977-78, Petersburg School Board 1964-71, Fort Lee Army Advisory Committee, Charter Board Member of Historic Petersburg Foundation, 1969-70 President of Virginia Passenger Bus Association, 1993 President of Petersburg Crime Solvers, President 1990-2002 Petersburg Methodist Orphanage Foundation, member St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, 1990-2002 Petersburg Traffic Commission, and member of Powhatan Starke Lodge #124 AF&AM. He joined the Petersburg Kiwanis Club in 1952, serving as president 1975-76, Lt. Gov. Div. 4-B 1978-79, President of Capital District Foundation 1979-81, and Governor of the Capitol District 1983-84. He was a life member of Kiwanis International, a George Hixon Fellow, and a recipient of the Tablet of Honor from the Kiwanis Capital District Foundation. The family will receive friends from 3:00-6:00 on Sunday, August 22, 2004 at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. Services will be held 11 A.M. Monday, August 23, 2004 at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church 225 Claremont St. Petersburg, Va. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mark’s Methodist Church or Southside Virginia Emergency Crew P.O. Box 574, Petersburg, Va. 23804.
