Hubert (Coach, Hubie, Pop) Payne, 80, of Hopewell, VA (Petersburg, VA from 1959 ? 2002), passed away November 10, 2005. He was born on November 23, 1924, in Excelsior, WV, to the late William H. and Belle Adair Payne. He proudly served his country during World War II in the United States Marine Corps. He was a graduate of Concord College in Athens, West Virginia, and received his master?s degree from The College of William and Mary. Hubert truly enjoyed his many years as an educator and coach at Petersburg High School and in the Prince George County School System. He was also an avid University of Virginia sports fan. Survivors include his devoted wife of 60 years, Nadine Burks Payne, of Hopewell, VA; his only daughter, Carol Payne Martin, his eldest granddaughter Dr. Caroline Martin Eakes and her husband Darrell W. Eakes, all of Richmond; his youngest granddaughter, Sara Adair Martin, of Raleigh, NC; and his adorable granddog, Bailey. He was one of ten children, and those surviving are one sister, Mary P. Owens, of Lady Lake, Florida, and two brothers, William H. Payne, Jr. of Blacksburg, VA, and James Franklin Payne, of Hopewell, VA. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Irvin Lloyd Payne, Melvin Walter Payne, Ernest Payne, and three sisters, Edith Payne Cyphers, Sarah Payne Stephenson, and Helen Payne Cyphers. The funeral will be held at J.T. Morriss Funeral Home, Petersburg, VA, on Monday, November 14, 2005 at 11 a.m. with interment to follow in Southlawn Memorial Park.
