Ida Evelyn Davis Rivers, 93, went to sleep in the Lord on October 10, 2004 while at home. She was born on September 7, 1911 to John Richard Davis and Eva Eugenia Roach Davis in Petersburg, Virginia, and was a lifelong resident of the city. She and Garland E. Rivers were united in marriage on January 13, 1940. She retired from Titmus Optical Company after 30 years of employment.
Ida was a member of the Petersburg Seventh-day Adventist Church for over 60 years, and held the office of Church Treasurer for more than 20 of those years. In an effort to keep pace with the times she even took on the challenge of learning the computer at age 83 so she could continue her treasurer’s duties. Ida was also a good musician and freely used her skills to bless the church in all its needs and services. Ida never retired from sharing her musical talents and played the organ for church up to her death. She found some of her greatest joy in giving Bible Studies and introducing people to Jesus. Ida was also well known and appreciated by the hundreds of people she served while selling Florida citrus fruit at the R.A. Lewis Christian School. Her Christian character and care for others made her beloved by family and friends and she will be missed by a church family who loved her deeply.
Those left to cherish her memory are her sister, Katherine Hepburn and husband Ira of Chester; nieces, Carolyn McAndrew and husband Kenneth of Texas and Barbara Mayfield of Chester; nephew, David Hepburn and wife Holly of Lynchburg; great-nieces, Melanie Henderson and husband Glenn of Chester, Michelle Burkett and husband Adam of San Francisco, CA and Ramona Skriiko and husband John of Tuscon, AZ; great-nephew, Kevin Bailey of Tuscon, AZ.
Visitation will be at the J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home in Petersburg beginning at 4:00 P.M. on Sunday, October 17, 2004 with the family to receive friends until 5:30 P.M.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 18, 2004 at 11:00 A.M. at the Petersburg Seventh-day Adventist Church with burial to follow at Blandford Cemetery.
