James Roscoe Whelan, II, 77, of Chesterfield County, passed away Wednesday, July 4, 2012 at his residence. He was a native of Petersburg, born the son of the late Christine C. and James O. Whelan, Sr. He was a member of Second Chance Baptist Church and an Army Veteran serving in the Korean War. Mr. Whelan was a local business man and entrepreneur since 1959, having owned and operated gas stations, car washes, laundromats and even hotels. He is survived by his wife, Eileen Whelan of Chesterfield; daughter, Sherry W. Upton (John); son, James R. Whelan, III (Elizabeth); five grandchildren, John Richard Upton, Jr., Brooke E. Upton, Casey G. Upton, Skylar C. Upton and Emily Eleanor Whelan; aunt, Ina Glazer; uncle, James Glazer; two sisters-in-law, Barbara Green and Mary Costas; brother-in-law, Tom Wood. A funeral service will be conducted 10:00 am Monday, July 9, 2012, at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home & Cremation Service with interment to follow in Sunset Memorial Park.
