MSgt. Iris L. Hammond, Ret. Passed away on Wednesday, October 12, 2005 surrounded by his family. He was born in Dry Prong, LA on September 22, 1915 to Clyde and Clara Hammond. He leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife of sixty years, Lillian; his sons, Richard and wife, Eleanor, Robert, Roger and wife, Deborah; his grandchildren LeeAnn Slator and husband, Brian, Richard C. Hammond, Todd Hammond and wife, Julia, Christopher Hammond and wife, Christine, Jeffrey Hammond and ?baby-son? Melissa Hammond and his great grandson and most adoring fan, Kevin; his brothers, Tony, Dewey, Aubrey and Brandy Hammond. MSgt. Hammond served with honor and proudly in the U. S. Army for twenty-six years from 1940 to 1965. He was in the quarter-master during WW II and the Korean Conflict. He was honored with seven Good conduct Medals, American Defense Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal, WW II Victory Medal, National Defense Medal and the Army of Occupancy of Germany Medal. He retired from Fort Lee, VA taking permanent residence in Petersburg, VA where he then took a position with the Commonwealth of Virginia as supervisor for the Richmond/Petersburg Turnpike Authority. Mr. Hammond was a gentle man of great honor, dignity and integrity rewarding all who knew him. He will always be remembered for his dry sense of humor, strong work ethic and love of country. He will surely be missed but never forgotten. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 12 Noon in the Chesterfield Chapel of J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home & Cremation Service. Interment with military honors will follow in Bermuda Memorial Park, Chester, VA.
