Irving Franklin Vaughan, Sr., 80, of Carson, Virginia, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, March 18, 2013, with his family at his bedside. Irving was a devoted member of Salem United Methodist Church, Carson, Virginia. He was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. After Korea he was stationed in Guam and Japan where he went to Crane and Shovel School and Tractor-Scraper School. He was also trained to operate other heavy equipment. He became a skilled engineer in the trade. Upon returning home he used his new found trade and made a career first in road construction, then Civil Service at Fort Pickett. He retired in 1990 with 32 years U.S. Army service. Irving was a lifelong NASCAR fan. He was the son of the late Ernest Vaughan and Ruth Vaughan Emory. He was preceded in death by a brother, B.J. Vaughan; a sister, Virginia Mariniak; and son-in-law, Scott Finch. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Helen Dancy Vaughan; four children, Frank Vaughan and wife, Sheila, Tim Vaughan and wife, Kimra, Sherry V. Finch, and Vicki V. Sokol; nine grandchildren, Rev. David Vaughan and wife, April, Brian Vaughan and wife, Andrea, Rachel and Rebekah Vaughan, Sarah and Katie Finch, Maggie Finch Wolford and husband, Patrick, Lindsey and Emily Sokol; one great-grandson, Micah Vaughan; two brothers, Thomas and Edward Vaughan; and one sister, Lucille Chappell. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 20th at the Petersburg Chapel of J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home & Cremation Service. A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Thursday at Salem United Methodist Church, 19312 Templeton Road, Carson, VA, with The Reverend Robin Jones officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
