J. Ernest Pittman, 94, passed away at his home in Wakefield, VA., with his family by his side on Saturday, January 14, 2006. Born May 22, 1911 in Dendron, Va., he was the son of the late Ernest Augusta Pittman and Emma Grubbs Pittman. He was a 1928 graduate of Dendron High School and married the late Mary Lovell Wood of Claremont in 1931. Ernest opened his first business in the M. G. Service Station in Wakefield in 1935; received a Chrysler franchise in 1936 and opened Southside Motor Co. in Wakefield at that time. In 1967 he opened Pittman Chrysler-Plymouth in Williamsburg and was the owner and operator of this business until 1998 when he retired. Mr. Pittman was the first one to bring peanut bins for drying peanuts to this area; owned Pittman Equipment Co. which sold Ferguson and Oliver tractors; was one of the founding directors of Old Colony Bank in Williamsburg, VA; a member of the Williamsburg Rotary Club; past president of the Wakefield Ruritan Club; and served on the Wakefield Town Council from 1962 ? 1972. He was an avid golfer for many years, and a member of the Wakefield United Methodist Church where he taught the Young Men?s Sunday School Class.

He is survived by two daughters, Joan P. Drewry and husband, Howard, and Betty P. Gay; and one son, James E. Pittman, all of Wakefield; three grandchildren, Gayle D. Simms, Michael Drewry and wife, Lenore, Robyn G. Croft and husband, John, all of Wakefield; seven great-grandchildren, Chris Simms and wife, Jennie, of Wakefield, Sara W. Simms and fiancé Jake Harsh, of Nashville, TN, Kristen Drewry of New York, NY, Carla and David Drewry, Katy and Jonathan Croft, all of Wakefield; and one sister, Mary Elizabeth Rogers of Wakefield. He is also survived by his devoted caregivers, Doneal Johnson, Linda Ellis, and Myretta Ruffin.

Mr. Pittman was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Mary Lovell Wood Pittman; granddaughter, Jobe L. Gay; and sisters, Frances P. Brantley and Marion P. Troxler.

Graveside funeral services will be held Monday, January 16, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. in Wakefield Cemetery, Wakefield, Virginia, with the Rev. G. C. Branton officiating. The family will receive friends at the residence at 206 W. Church St., Wakefield. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Wakefield Foundation, Wakefield United Methodist Preschool, or to Tidewater Academy.
