Jacqueline Thacker Simmons

February 23, 1940 — May 31, 2024

Jacqueline Thacker Simmons, from Disputanta, VA, affectionately known as Jacqui, passed away peacefully on May 31, 2024, in Petersburg, VA, surrounded by her loving family. Born to Marie and John Harwood Thacker, Jr. on February 23, 1940, in Petersburg, she was a beacon of light and warmth in the community she dearly loved after returning home to Disputanta in 2007.

Jacqui was a cherished member of the Thacker family, sister to Anne Marie (Jack) Kitchen and the late John Harwood (Page) Thacker III. Jacqui met the love of her life, Joseph Simmons, in third grade in Disputanta. In 1962, she married her beloved Joe in a beautiful ceremony at their family church, marking the beginning of a shared life filled with love and devotion.

After graduating from Prince George High School in 1958, Jacqui attended Lynchburg College, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in 1962. Jacqui dedicated her early years to education, until she decided to dedicate her life to being a fantastic and wonderful mother. Jacqui supported her family through the many passions and difficulties of their lives.

Jacqui's love extended to her two children, Mastin (Jennifer) Simmons, and Theresa (David) Childress, who remember her as a nurturing soul, always ready with a comforting word or an engaging story. ‍

Jacqui was an avid golfer, enjoyed "antiquing" and could never resist a good deal - even if it wasn't such a good deal. She also enjoyed traveling and spending time with her close friends and family. Jacqui's life journey with her husband took her many places - Hopewell, VA; Harbor Beach, MI; Queensbury, NY; St. Simons Island, GA; Anaheim Hills, CA; Upper St. Clair, PA and then back to Disputanta, VA. Her life was filled with adventure and love.

Predeceased by her parents; and her brother, John Harwood. Jacqui's memory will be cherished and kept alive by her husband, Joseph; her children; her sister, Anne Marie; and a community that was better for her presence.

The family will receive visitors at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, on Sunday, June 9, 2024, from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Services to honor and celebrate the life of Jacqueline Thacker Simmons will be held on Monday, June 10, 2024, at 10:00 a.m., at the funeral home. Following the service, Jacqui will be laid to rest at Southlawn Memorial Park. A luncheon for family and friends will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church in Disputanta after the burial service.

The honor of pallbearer is bestowed upon her nephew, Stephan Kitchen, nephews-in-law, Jay Bakale, Gene Corbett and Jared Thacker, first cousin, Jimmy Lee Thacker and close friend, John Leonard, and honorary pallbearer, J.B. Brown.

Jacqueline Thacker Simmons will be profoundly missed, but her spirit will continue to guide and inspire all who were blessed to know her.
