Dr. James H. Bailey, an authority on Petersburg’s history and a former curator of the Petersburg Museums, died on Wednesday, September 29, 2004 at a nursing home in Charlottesville, VA. His funeral will take place from St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Petersburg 11:00 AM Monday, October 4, 2004. There will be a Rosary Wake at St. Joseph’s 5 PM Sunday, October 3, 2004. Dr. Bailey was born in Petersburg on November 1, 1919. He was educated at St. Joseph’s School and was a graduate of The College of William and Mary. He received his post-graduate degrees at the University of Virginia and Georgetown University and became a member of the faculty of the History Department at Brenau College in Gainesville, GA. Dr. Bailey served in the U.S. Army during the Second World War. James H. Bailey was the author of the text of the 1976 book, “Old Petersburg”, as well as the 1989 APVA publication on the work of 19th century Petersburg artists, William Skinner Simpson, Senior and Junior. Dr. Bailey was also the author of “The History of The Catholic Diocese of Richmond” and “The History of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Richmond”. There are no immediate survivors.
