Mr. James E. Caudle, 80, of Petersburg passed away Monday May 31, 2004 at Southside Regional Medical Center. He was a native of Chesterfield county and lifelong resident of this area and was the son of the late, Jimmy Coleman and Lois Eunice Owen Caudle. Mr. Caudle was a Veteran of World War II and was a Purple Heart recepiant and was retired Lt. Col. From the United States Army Reserves. He received his BA Degree from University of Richmond and his Masters from Chapel Hill University of North Carolina. He taught English at Radford College.
After teaching college Mr. Caudle was employed at Fort Lee where he was head of the Training Literature and Film Department Fort Lee Quartermaster School retiring after thirty years of service. Doing this period of work at Fort Lee Mr. Caudle for eighteen years had been the assistant to all the Corps Officers in this exchange program. Without his expertise, tact, and endless patience coupled with a wonderful sense of humor, he made a personal contribution to the class association of the United States Quartermaster Corps and the British Army Corps. Upon retiring from Fort Lee Mr. Caudle worked in real estate. He was owner of Kings BBQ #1 West Washington Street and owner of Mayfield Bed and Breakfast which he had completely restored.
Mr. Caudle was very interested in historic preservation and received the Preservation/Restoration award in 1992 and the Petersburg Heritage award in 1998 for his with Historic Petersburg Foundation. He is survived by his wife of fifty seven years of marriage, Dorothy Holleman Caudle, one daughter, Kimberly Caudle Phillingane and husband Louis A. Phillingane all of Petersburg, four sisters, Evelyn C. Skinner of Petersburg, Mabel C. Hamner of Dinwiddie, Jeanette C. Miller of Petersburg, Yvonne C. Watterson and husband Dr. Gene Watterson of Shelby, N.C., sister-in-law, Hilda F. Caudle of Opeleika, Ala., and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, W.A. Caudle. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday June 3, 2004 at 11:00 A.M. in the Petersburg Chapel of J. T Morriss & Son Funeral Home with Dr. Rand Forder pastor of First Baptist Church and Rev. Dr. Gene Watterson and Rev. Henry Brown officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Blandford Cemetery.
