James Harold England

James Harold England, 84, of Hopewell, VA passed away on Saturday, March 5, 2016. James was born June 6, 1931, on Prince Henry Avenue (City Point) Hopewell, VA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eliem and Delma England, his childhood sweetheart and loving wife for 61 years, Marie Hammonds England; brother, R. Stanford England; sister, Phyllis E. Creech; and son in law, Bob Lubman. He is survived by his children, Jeannie E. Lubman, David A. England (Beverly), Cathie E. Ingram (Mark), Stephen D. England; grandchildren, Catherine H. Roeder (Lee), Patricia H. Hass (Kenny); great grandchildren, Jaelynn Roeder and Sadie Roeder; brother, Raymond O. England (Gloria). Mr. England graduated from Hopewell High School and worked at Hercules until he joined the United States Air Force in 1950 during the Korean War. He was assigned to the 6461st Troop Carrier Squadron (the “Kyushu Gypsies”) and was honorably discharged as Staff Sergeant in 1954. Following his military service he went back to work at Hercules and over time became Supervisor over the Instrument Shop and later an Engineer over the Combined Electrical and Instrument Shop. James retired in August 1991. He loved to maintain his huge garden and enjoyed vacations with his family at Douthat State Park where he hiked and fished all day long. He loved cooking his big Sunday dinners and spending lots of “Grandpa Time” with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a devoted NASCAR fan and “loved dem Cowboys”. He also served on various boards and commissions for the City of Hopewell and was a charter member of West Hopewell Presbyterian Church. In the 1970’s he and his family became members of First Baptist Church in Hopewell. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 8, 2016 at the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, 820 West Broadway Hopewell, VA 23860. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 9, 2016 at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Bermuda Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or First Baptist Church 401 N. 2nd Ave, Hopewell, VA 23860.
