James Tasker Fleming, Sr.

November 8, 1942 — April 21, 2023

James Tasker (J.T.), 80, of Petersburg, Virginia died on April 21, 2023 at Southside General Hospital.

Born in Inez in Warren County, NC, he was the son of the late Sol Benjamin and Myrtle Stallings Fleming. As a young adult, J.T. was involved in numerous Warren County Organizations. He was the executive director of the Warren County Chamber of Commerce, board member on the Kerr-Tar Regional Council of Government, President of the Vance, Granville, Franklin, and Warren Life Underwriters and a board member of the Warren County Health Department. He also was elected to the Warren County Board of Commissioners in 1984. He owned and operated Fleming Realty and Construction in Warrenton. He proudly refurbished the former Warren Theater which was used for many civic and community events. He also was an insurance broker and in later years worked in auto sales. He had many fond memories of his years in Warren County.

J.T. loved his family and friends. In 1975 he donated a kidney to his sister, Elna. He enjoyed singing and playing guitar in church and especially in his daughter's home on holidays with family. He often participated in community events like the annual "Hee Haw" fundraiser for the fire departments. He played and sang the songs of both Hank Williams and Johnny Cash for the Lakeland Arts Dinner Theater Production in the 1990s. He was a Richard Petty fan and enjoyed attending races with his brothers, nephews, son, and especially with his grandson, Matthew. He was an avid collector of native American artifacts. He enjoyed writing and had three novels published sharing the history of life in the area where he was raised. J.T. was the 15th of 16 brothers and sisters. Family was a vital part of his life.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, April 26, 2023 at New Covenant Ministries. A burial service will be held at Fairview on April 26, 2023 with Rev. Robby Ross presiding. Surviving is his wife, Carol E. Fleming; a daughter, Judy Hobbs (and her children, Daniel and Amanda Hobbs); daughter, Darlene Gill (Clint), of Oxford; son, Tasker Fleming (Traci) of Albemarle; one brother, Bill Fleming of Morganton; sisters, Alma Walker, Eva Woodfin, and Mildred Morrison of Colonial Heights; and sisters, Irma Gard (Ferl) of Henderson and Ann Spence (Bill) of Norlina. He was preceded in death by brothers, Johnny, Sol, Howard, Charles, and Ralph and sisters, Ruth, Ada, Elna, and Arnetta. He leaves behind grandsons Jeffrey Vaughan, Andrew Gill, Caleb Gill, Clay Thompson (Amanda), and Matthew Fleming and granddaughters Morgan Thompson and Madison Black (Ethan). He proudly shared his love of arrowheads with his great-granddaughter Stormi Thompson. His smile was especially bright when sharing time with is great-grandson Brody Black.
