James Eugene Koontz Sr.

James Eugene Koontz Sr., of Prince George, passed away on Tuesday, March 21, 2017. James is preceded in death by his parents, Harry E. and Thelma Blanche Thomas Koontz. James served his country proudly in the Army from 1962 to 1965. He managed Drug Fair for several years and then became a construction superintendent for J.W. Enochs. He was an avid NASCAR fan and loved working in his wood shop where he built numerous custom pieces of furniture. James was a member of St. Joseph Church, Grand Knight for Massey Council from 1996 to 1998, and Faithful Navigator Appomattox Assembly from 1998 to 2001 and from 2011 to 2012, Knights of Columbus and the American Legion. James never met a stranger and was loved by many. A special thanks to TLC Healthcare aide, Lawanda and Hospice at Home Care who made his final days at home peaceful. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Anna Elizabeth “Betty” Koontz; sons, Jimmy Koontz (Kristy), Greg Koontz (Tracy); grandchildren, Matthew, Jeremy, Amanda, Colton, Kyle, Noah, Hayden; other extended family and friends. The family will receive friends from 6pm to 8pm on Thursday, March 23, 2017 at the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss and Son Funeral Home, with a Rosary service to begin at 6pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10am on Friday March 24, 2017 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 151 W Washington St, Petersburg, VA 23803 with interment to follow in Merchants Hope Memorial Gardens in Prince George. A reception will be held at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 121 S. 15th Ave., Hopewell, VA 23860 following the cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to St. Joseph’s Church Capital Building Fund or the Little Sisters of the Poor, 1503 Michael Road, Richmond, VA 23229 in his honor.
