James Joseph O’Neill, 84 of Hopewell, VA., passed away Saturday, December 8, 2018. He is preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Catherine Dempsey O’Neill and step-mother, Lena O’Neill.
James was a former member of Wesley United Methodist Church. He was a United States Army Veteran serving for more than 26 years. He served in Korea and Vietnam, where he received the Bronze Star while serving with the 101ST Airborne Division. He was a member of the VFW Post 637 and the American Legion Post 146. After the Army, James retired after more than 15 years of service with Phillip Morris.
He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Moyra B. O’Neill; son, James F. O’Neill, Thomas R. O’Neill (Jennifer), daughter, Catherine A. Brown, son, Brian K. O’Neill (Natalie) and S. Paul O’Neill (Sarah); grandchildren, Clinton, Marcus, Aimee, Tiffany, Derek, Ronnie, Jessica, Joshua, Megan and Coleman; great-grandchildren, Bryanna, Coby, Caden, Landon, Emma, and Kate; great-great-grandchildren, Brooklyn and Sophia; sister, Dorothy Treacy (Brian); sister-in-law, Myrtle and Leonard Vess; brother-in-law, Dr. Roy Bentley (Joan); niece, Frances Eggleston (Keith); nephew, Michael Vess (Michelle), as well as numerous extended family and friends in Belfast, Ireland.
The family will receive friends, 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., Saturday, December 15, 2018 at J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, 820 W. Broadway, Hopewell, VA., where a service will be held at 2:00 p.m. with Dr. Ivan Perkinson officiating.
