Colonel James Edwin McDowell, US Army Retired, 90, beloved husband, father, and grandfather died November 25th, 2007 in Frederick, MD. He was born in Philadelphia, PA on November 3rd 1917, the son of the late James Milford and Lillian Evans McDowell. Colonel McDowell was a starting quarterback for Temple University and graduated in 1940 with a degree in business administration. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant Reserve Officer in the Quartermaster Corps in April 1939 and called to active duty in January 1941 at then Camp Lee, Virginia. During his military career he participated in the New Guinea, Leyte, and Luzon Campaigns in World War II, and later served in Germany, Japan, and Korea. His decorations include the Legion of Merit with two oak leaf clusters and the Army Commendation Medal with one oak leaf cluster. Some of Colonel McDowellâ??s military assignments were Director Procurement, DGSC; Deputy G-4, HQ Eighth Army, Korea; Commanding Officer, Inventory Control Point, Philadelphia; and Commanding Officer, US Army Quartermaster Depot, Giessen, Germany. After a long and distinguished military career of 30 years, Colonel McDowell retired at Ft. Lee, Virginia on January 31, 1972. Following his military service he was employed by the State of Virginia at Virginia Commonwealth University as manager of the University Bookstore. He later was a representative with Wallaceâ??s College Textbook Company. Colonel McDowell was a member of the Southside Virginia Chapter of The Retired Officers Association, Life Member Retired Officers Association, Scottish Rite of Freemasonry Valley of Richmond, Melita Lodge No. 295 F&A.M., American Association of Retired Persons, and the Petersburg Lions Club. Colonel McDowell was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Elizabeth Butler McDowell, and is survived by three sons: Reverend James Richard McDowell, his wife Yvonne and granddaughter, Jennifer Marie McDowell of Afton, VA; MAJ Douglas Lee McDowell, his wife Angie and two grandsons, Taylor Lee McDowell and Ryan Michael McDowell of Frederick, MD; and Donald Lee McDowell and his wife Mary of Steenbergen, The Netherlands; his cousin by marriage, Jane Haynes of Winnsboro, South Carolina and many faithful friends .JT Morriss and Son Funeral Home, Petersburg, VA is serving the family. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, November 30th from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. A funeral service will be conducted on Saturday, the 1st of December at 1:00 pm at St. Markâ??s United Methodist Church, 225 Claremont St., Petersburg, VA. Interment will follow at the Memorial Society Tract, Southlawn Memorial Park, 1911 Birdsong Rd., Petersburg, VA, with full military honors.
