James "Jim" Melvin Vick, 40, of Chester, VA, passed away on Tuesday, May 7, 2024. Born in Petersburg, VA, he was the son of the late Eddie Thomas Vick; and was also preceded in death by his grandparents, Melvin Elder, and James and Ethel Vick; and his great-grandparents, Harry and Elizabeth Poole. Following by the example set by his father, Jim went on to serve the citizens of Petersburg for 21 years, as a firefighter reaching the rank of Captain. He was currently serving as the President of the Local 2773. Jim was an avid fisherman and hunter, and enjoyed doing those activities with his father and son. He was a proud father, dedicated employee, and a brother to his fire department family. Jim is survived by his son, Laythan Poole Vick; his fiancee, Jessica Marie Goodman; mother, Shelia Vick (Tommy); biological mother, Margaret Waltrip (Tommy); his grandmother, Aubrey Elder; three siblings, Joshua Vick (Casey), August Koepke (Jay), Ashton Jones (Victoria) and Sarah Waltrip; and numerous nieces, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and fire department family. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jason Elmore, officiating. Interment will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Capron Cemetery, Capron, VA. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, at the funeral home.
