Quintus Jerrell Sober, 83, a long time resident of Hopewell, VA, died Friday, May 1, 2009 in John Randolph Medical Center. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII. Jerry proudly served on Hopewellâ??s City Council for two terms, was an outstanding graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and taught at Hopewell High School for many years where he received the Virginia Teacher of the Year award in 1980. He will be remembered by many former students as an excellent teacher, who truly had a passion for education. Jerry dedicated much of his time to serving the community by being actively involved in many community organizations and boards. As a tenor soloist he often sang at local churches and other functions in the area. Jerry enjoyed the arts and often was a critic for theaters and playhouses in the area. Mr. Sober was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey LeRoy and Floy Wright Sober, a sister Rachel Sober Dunn and a brother, Franklin LeRoy Sober. He is survived by two sisters, E. Hope Conrad and her husband Daniel of Sunbury, PA, Hazel F. Cooke and her husband Raymond of Suffolk, two brothers, David W. Sober, Sr. and his wife Nancy of Manakin-Sabot, Virginia, Eugene F. Sober and his wife Louise of Hopewell, a brother-in-law, Dr. Paul Dunn of Sterling, VA, a sister-in-law, Carol S. Sober of Colonial Heights, VA, and many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends Sunday, May 3, 2009 from 7:00 to 8:30 PM in the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held Monday, May 4, 2009 at 10:00 AM in the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Jeff Raymond, pastor, assisted by the Rev. William Taylor, Jr. of St. Johnâ??s Episcopal Church officiating. Interment will be in Southlawn Memorial Park, Prince George, VA. Memorial contributions may be made to your favorite charity.
