Jerry Joseph Skalsky, 74, of Prince George, VA passed away on Wednesday, May 24, 2017 at Southside Regional Medical Center. Born and raised on a farm in Prince George County, VA he was the son of the late Jerry Adolph and Mary Kotasek Skalsky. Mr. Skalsky attended Richard Bland College, Travecca Nazarene where he received his Bachelor’s degree, and Virginia State and Chapman Colleges where he completed his Master’s degree in counseling. He married Brenda Sober in 1961 and together they had four adult children and three grandchildren. Mr. Skalsky taught school for ten years, served as juvenile probation officer for 12 years, and was a high school and middle school counselor and attendance officer for 16 years before retiring in 2006. He was elected in 2000 to serve on the Board of Supervisors in Prince George County where he was active for almost 18 years. He was a founding member of Prince George Rescue Squad where he served for 47 years. He was a lifelong member of Monumental Baptist Church where he was a Sunday school teacher and assisted with foreign and domestic missions. Mr. Skalsky served on a variety of Boards, Commissions, and Committees, local state and national to include but not limited to: Comprehensive Services Policy and Management Council, Information Technology, Extension Leadership Counsil, South Centre’ Corridors Resource Conservation Development Council, Southern Rivers Roundtable, Friends of the Lower Appomattox River, Central Virginia Health Services, Super Kids Ministries, YMCA, Metropolitan Planning Organization, Crater Planning District Commission, Prince George Historical Society; Charter Member of Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee, Prince George Volunteer Emergency Crew and Agriculture and Environment Committee of VACO. Jerry was truly an ambassador for Prince George County in many ways throughout his life. He enjoyed traveling, attending school and recreational functions and outdoor activities, including hunting, fishing and gardening. Jerry loved his community involvement and devoted spending time with his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Brenda Sober Skalsky; four children, Deb Skalsky, J.J. Skalsky and wife, Tammy, Dr. Julie Skalsky Brown and husband, Dr. David Brown and Heidi Skalsky; four grandchildren, Forrest, Joshua, Haley and Grace; one sister, Evelyn S. Hanzlik and husband, Ed; a brother, Charles Skalsky and wife, JoAnn; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. The family will receive friends from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 28, 2017 at Prince George County High School. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, May 29, 2017 at Prince George County High School. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Prince George County Parks and Recreation Foundation, P.O. Box 712, Prince George, VA 23875 or to West End Assembly of God, in honor of his missionary daughter Deb, 401 N. Parham Rd., Richmond, VA 23229 in memory of Jerry Skalsky.
