Jimmie Ray Lucas, 79, of Hopewell, Virginia, passed away at home on Tuesday, August 1, 2023, with his children by his side.
Jimmie was born in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, on January 15, 1944, to James Noble Lucas and Wilbur Adeliene Barnes.
After finishing high school, Jimmie joined the United States Army. He was proud to be a veteran of the U.S Armed Forces and served his country with pride.
At an early age, Jimmie discovered his love for music which continued throughout his life. He taught himself to play several instruments, but it was his love for the guitar for which he is known.
In 1994, Jimmie met the love of his life, Bonnie. Together they began their adventures that lasted for over 25 years. Whether it was volunteering for the Red Cross, traveling around the United States, or taking the grandkids to the zoo, the theater, or simply to breakfast, Jimmie and Bonnie ensured plenty of memories were made.
Throughout his life, Jimmie enjoyed fishing, going to the shooting range, and spending time with his family and friends.
Jimmie is preceded in death by his parents, James and Wilbur; his daughter, Melissa Lucas; and the love of his life, Bonnie Coghill. He is survived by his four children; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. They include his daughter, Renee Best (Kevin); granddaughters, Erica Best, Brittany Best Palmer (Tim), and Kendal Best Marable (Adam); and great-grandchildren, Landon May, Kyleigh Palmer, Sawyer Palmer, and Mason Wallace; his son, Bill Lucas; grandchildren, Paris Lucas Spence (Joyce), Jacob Lucas, and Nicholas Lucas; his son, James Lucas; grandchildren, Clayton Lucas and Julia Lucas; his daughter, Theresa Lucas; and grandson, Kade Lucas.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m., on Saturday, August 12, 2023, at the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. The funeral will immediately follow the visitation beginning at 3:00 p.m.
