Colonel Jim McIlwain, died on September 26, 2023, in Hopewell, Virginia, at the age of 83. He was a retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel, commercial pilot, carpenter, and Mustang enthusiast. He leaves behind a legacy of courage, resilience, and love. He was a beloved husband, father, and friend, and his presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Born in Exira, Iowa, in August 1940, Jim began his journey of service at 19, joining the United States Air Force as a navigator initially and an aviator later. His military career spanned over 25 years and around the world. One of his notable achievements in the Air Force was skillfully piloting the F106 Delta Dart, an aircraft renowned for its speed and agility. He served in the Vietnam War, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to his country and earning numerous decorations for his bravery and valor.
After retiring from the Air Force, Jim continued to pursue his passion for aviation, as a flight instructor, and commercial pilot for another 20 years, sharing his love for the skies with countless passengers. In his free time, he found solace in restoring cars and boats, working on his beloved '66 Mustang, and in carpentry, creating beautiful house projects that showcased his talent and attention to detail. He was active in the Hopewell VFW, serving as his local post's Commander for several years, The American Legion, and Moose Lodge.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Gloria, who stood by his side through the challenges and triumphs of his life, in unwavering dedication and optimism. They met and fell in love at Stewart Air Force base, in Newburgh, NY, on October 26th, 1963. He is also survived by his three sons, Robert, Richard, and Ronald; daughter-in-law, Rose; his sister, Judith Fletcher; and beloved nieces and nephews. He will be remembered for his loyalty to his family, his country, and his passions; his memory will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him.
Visiting hours will be held on Monday, October 16, 2023, from 6pm - 8pm, at the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home (820 W. Broadway Avenue Hopewell, VA 23860).
A mass will be held on Tuesday, October 17, 2023, at 10am, at St. James the Greater Catholic Church (510 W. Poythress Street Hopewell, VA 23860). The mass will be followed by a reception, at the church. Burial will follow the reception, at 2pm, at Virginia Veterans Cemetery at Amelia.
