Joan Thomas Blake, 66 of New Kent, formerly of Hopewell VA, passed away on Monday, January 28, 2013. She is survived by her loving husband, Harry Blake; her son, Michael B. Young and his wife Joyce, of Fairbanks, AK; her sisters, Judy Panko and her husband, John of Cape Coral, FL, and Brenda Richmond and her husband, James of Chesterfield, VA; her nephews, Anthony Miele of Boston, MA, Kevin Miele of S. Hadley, MA, Christopher Richmond of Glen Allen, VA; niece, Natalie Richmond of Chesterfield, VA; a number of grand nieces and nephews; relatives and friends. Joan lived most of her life in Hopewell; and was a loving and caring woman who spent a great deal of time caring for those she was close to. She loved all of nature and was known for her extensive knowledge of plants and enjoyed spending time gardening. She loved to hunt for unique treasures, whether in little out of the way shops or estate sales. She loved to travel and explore. Once she went to Graceland and spent hours talking about personal memories of Elvis with his uncle. Joan had a keen interest in all history with a particular interest in the many Virginia historic houses. She also had a wicked (wonderful) sense of humor. She had an inquisitive mind and was an independent thinker, and was always interested in and stayed well informed about current events. She will be missed by many, including her two cats, Susie and Joshua. The family would like to thank the doctors and nursing staff of Memorial Regional Medical Center for their wonderful and caring manner with her in the ICU. The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 2, 2013 at the Chester Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Homes. Interment will be private. Joan had a special place in her heart for those in need. In honor of her life and in lieu of flowers, please donate to your local food bank. Condolences may be registered online at
