Joan Ellene Eanes, 90, a resident of Lakewood Manor Retirement Community and former resident of Ettrick, VA, passed away Monday, June 18, 2012. She was the daughter of the late Thomas Hamilton and Hilda Pond Eanes. Mrs. Eanes graduated from Petersburg High School in 1939. She attended Mary Washington College for two years and went on to graduate from the Medical College of Virginia School of Nursing in 1944. She served with the U. S. Army Nursing Corps from April, 1945 to September, 1946, during which time she was stationed at Okinawa after D Day. Following her military service, she returned to MCV and received her B.S. in Nursing Education in 1949. From 1949 to 1960, she worked as a public health nurse at INVA (Instructive Visiting Nurse Association), during which time she completed her MPH Degree at the University of Michigan. She returned again to MCV School of Nursing and was on the faculty from 1960 to 1985. Following her retirement, she enjoyed extensive travel and, in 1997, moved to Lakewood Manor. She was a former member of Ettrick Baptist Church for 65 years, and was currently a member of Derbyshire Baptist Church in Richmond. Mrs. Eanes is survived by her cousins and dear friends. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 23rd at The Simms Center at Lakewood Manor.
