Joan Hamlett Whitley, 71, passed away Monday, July 31, 2006 at her home in the community of Black Creek with her family by her side. Born in Edgecombe County, NC she was the daughter of the late Jesse Clinton Hamlett and Elsie Rose Hamlett. Joan loved birdwatching and flowers, was an avid gardener, and loved to read. She had retired as a home healthcare aide and was a member of First Baptist Church in Norfolk. Her greatest love was for her six grandsons. She was preceded in death by her husband, Garland Seward Whitley; brothers, Lynn T. Hamlett and Jesse C. Hamlett, Jr.; sisters, Nellie Carroll and Patricia Phillips; and a grandson, Ryan Whitley.
Mrs. Whitley is survived by her daughter, Glenda W. Topping of Courtland; two sons, Gerald C. Whitley of Windsor and G. Michael Whitley and wife, Ann, of Smithfield; sister, Helen Asuelo of Santa Rosa, CA; six grandsons, Brandon and Kyle Topping, Russ and Reed Whitley, Joseph and William Whitley; former Son-In-Law and Very Special Friend, Dexter Topping of Black Creek; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Graveside funeral services will be held on Friday, August 4, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. in Antioch Congregational Christian Church Cemetery, Windsor, Virginia, with the Rev. Jim Kerr officiating. The family will receive friends at Purviance Funeral Home Chapel, Wakefield, on Thursday evening, 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Condolences may be posted at www.jtmorriss.com .
